Coney Island

To Coney with Love. “Remembering Coney Island”

A special section for one of the most iconic landmarks of Anderson Township.

Dedicated to preserving the history of the Anderson Township area

Coney has a rich history that dates back to 1867 when James Parker purchased an apple orchard. The park suffered through adversity but became “Americas Finest Amusement Park.”

Coney Island Park

The Coney Island of the West. Ohio Grove officially opened on a rainy day June 21, 1886.

The pool reportedly cost around $500,000. The pool is still billed as the world`s largest recirculation swimming pool and was one of Coney`s biggest draws.

Sunlite Pool

Sunlite pool opened on May 22, 1925. Designed by W. J. Lynch of New Haven, CT and measured 200 feet by 401 feet.

In 1947, Moonlite Gardens was renovated with new wrought iron added to the façade to resemble the French Quarter in New Orleans. The renovations totaled $100,000.

Moonlite Gardens

The Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) constructed Moonlite Gardens, the open-air dance hall in 1925.

"Island Queen" the passageway to Coney Island

The first Island Queen began servicing Coney Island in 1896.  Built at a cost of $80,000 the boat, could hold 3,000 passengers at a time. On November 4, 1922 the Coney owned Morning Star caught on fire at Cincinnati`s public landing. The fire quickly spread to the adjacent Island Queen. At the time, Coney`s owner George Brooks estimated replacement costs of $200,000 and $250,000 for the boats respectively.
